Conceptualization of corporate social responsibility by the luxury hotels in Natal/RN, Brazil

Abstract

The study identifies what the decision makers in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of the luxury hotels of Natal/RN, Brazil understand by CSR and how they practice it in their business. A semi-structured in-depth interview was adopted and the interviews took place in the hotel’s premises with the presumed decision-makers in CSR. In general, this research found that luxury hotels in Natal/RN, Brazil are interested in CSR issues, but it can be observed that there is a lot to be done to improve the positive social actions of these hotels.

Tiago Melo, Universidad de Salamanca (USAL), Salamanca, Espanha

Holds a Master in Business Management from Liverpool University and a PhD in Business Research from Salamanca University, in Spain. He collaborates with the Think Tank of Corporate Social Responsibility, from Salamanca University and funded by Santander bank. He is currently in Brazil where he is involved in national projects in the tourism and small enterprises segments. Tiago’s research interests are in corporate social responsibility, corporate reputation and organizational culture.

Rosamaria Cox Moura-Leite, Universidad de Salamanca (USAL), Salamanca, Espanha

PhD in Business Economics from University of Salamanca - Spain, obtained an European Master degree in Local Development, University of Huelva - Spain and Montesquieu IV – France on 2008. Is a member of the Ibero-American think tank in Management and Corporate Social Responsibility of the University of Salamanca – Spain. Her topics of interest include: the evolution of the concept of social responsibility, its practical applications, the correlations with other variables within the corporate universe, and its impact on organizational performance.

Robert Carlton Padgett, Universidad de Salamanca (USAL), Salamanca, Espanha

PhD candidate in Business Economics, University of Salamanca - Spain, obtained a Masters degree in Development of Electronic Commerce Systems, University of Salamanca – Spain on 2007. Is a member of Ibero-American think tank in Management and Corporate Social Responsibility of the University of Salamanca – Spain. His topics of interest include: the relationship between R&D activities and CSR and the effect they have on company performance.
