Tourist transit and cultural reconfiguration: strategies of visibility of the patrimony in São Luis (MA)

Abstract

The article analyzes the process of revitalization of the urban spaces aiming at its incorporation to the tourist activity, having as focus of analysis the reconfiguration of the cultural patrimony of the historical center of São Luis, Maranhao. For in such a way the study it relates identity questions (HALL, 2000), tourist transit (SIMOES, 2008) and globalization (APPADURAI, 1999), lingering itself in practical of visibility and the multifunctionality of the culture in the context contemporary. By means of documentary bibliographical research (DENCKER, 2003) and of the not participant comment, the study it presents examples of reconfiguration of the cultural patrimony in the historical center of São Luís. One evidenced that the criminal actions of patrimonial preservation make possible the revalorization of the quantity architectural and the reconstruction of the memory by means of the tourist activity, to the time where the revitalization of the urban space caused to alterations in the sociocultural dynamics. The research points with respect to the necessity of a bigger interaction between global and the place in the promotion of the sustainable of the tourist projects.
