Abstract

This article starts with the understanding that community-based tourism differs methodologically and epistemologically from conventional tourism. From this assumption and the observation of practices of what is referred to as community-based tourism (CBT), the article builds knowledge on this form of community organization. Therefore, it reflects on definitions, concepts and features of CBT making clear its differentiation from communitarian tourism and conventional tourism. Then, it presents the experience of planning and organization of Projeto TBC that has been developed since 2010 in Antigo Quilombo Cabula, located in the central area of Salvador, Bahia. The methodologies developed and applied were elaborated as a participative process considering time, availability, profile and daily life of local residents involved. The results point to the importance of the actions already implemented in the social, historical, cultural, educational and political scopes for the communities – and that the diversity of their experiences have a lot to teach to the population of Salvador and, also, to visitors and tourists.
