Abstract:
The Recifes dos Corais Protected Area (APARC), located at Rio Grande do Norte Estate, encompasses the Maracajaú reef, one of the main tourist hot spots of the state. Given the importance of APARC to the protection of the coral reefs and for the tourism, the aim of this research was to identify the image that tourists and native community have regarding Maracajaú reef. It is our aim: a) to show the importance given by the native community to Maracajaú reef, b) to show the subjective meaning attribute by the native community to the Maracajaú reef; c) identify where the tourists obtain the first information about APARC; d) to verify whether it is important for tourists to know that they are visiting a Protected Area. Results show that both, tourists and native people have a misleading image regarding the reef, focusing more on financial returns than on protection of biodiversity.
