A invenção da Ilha Grande: a influência do Instituto Penal Cândido Mendes na turistificação

Abstract:
The Instituto Penal Cândido Mendes, settled in Ilha Grande from 1940 to 1994, have always set visitors’ interest and curiosity. Given its implosion in 1994 and the wrecks remains in Vila Dois Rios, there was the actual possibility to visit it. In this sense, the article tries to understand Instituto Penal Cândido Mendes’ role on the turistification of Ilha Grande, through Vila Dois Rios residents visions and of tourists concerning to it. The methodological procedure was field research and interviews. The results shows different points of view among residents and tourists and it was possible to realize that Ilha Grande was “invented” as an attractive site for tourism, because of the myths around the image of the prison.
